Install reader program.
Open file with reader program. Afterwards, reader program will automatically remember location of file.
If it is important for you to be able to read on a PDA without a Microsoft® operating system, you will want the Mobipocket Reader and the PRC format.
If you are using a hand computing device with Windows®, the best reading program is Microsoft Reader® and you will need the LIT format.
The best e-book experience and, not coincidentally, the closest to a traditional book is found with the Adobe Reader®, which requires the PDF format.
For accessibility concerns, the best program is Adobe Reader® with the PDF format. However, the Microsoft Reader®, which requires the LIT format, is very comparable and much easier to use.
For more detailed instructions, read about reader programs and formats.
supportbooksoncomputer.com recommends and supports three reader programs that may be downloaded free:
The Adobe Reader® supercedes both the Adobe Acrobat Reader® and the Adobe Acrobat eBook Reader® displaying Print Downloadable Format (PDF) files in manner attractive and convenient for computer reading. This program is well-suited to unusual book designs because it offers the customer a variety of control and view options. Also in favor of this program, it is already installed on most computers, since it is used widely across the internet to provide complex information documents. Available for Mac®, Windows®, and many other operating systems, including some handheld platforms. booksoncomputer.com does not, however, recommend this program and format for use on handheld devices, because of the inconvenience caused by the small display area.
The Microsoft Reader® provides an excellent reading experience when the e-book is well-designed and well-suited to its page structure. This program, however, does not adapt well to unusual designs. It functions similar to a browser and, like a browser, it enforces its own rules on the content. A great advantage, however, is the Microsoft font-rendering technology, especially on the Windows XP® operating system, which presents expecially clean and distinct text. This greatly relieves the strain on the eyes normally associated with computer screens. Another benefit of this program is that accessibility tools are built-in and easy to use. Available only for platforms with Microsoft® operating systems.
The Mobipocket Reader® is the most limited in presentationbooks are barely recognizable as such. Yet, this program is adaptable to almost any kind of platform, from palm tool to desktop. Consequently, with this program, electronic books become as fully portable as paper.
For maximum convenience, put all your e-books in the same place. If you use Microsoft Reader®, then you will already have a "My Library" folder inside your documents folder. However, it is best not to manipulate the "data" folder created by the Adobe Acrobat eBook Reader® when it automatically downloads and stores e-books.
The reader programs all have the ability to remember where the e-books are stored once they have been opened. However, if the book is moved, the shortcut will no longer function and will generate an error. In this case only, delete the "book" shortcut from the inside the program, and then open the e-book again at its new location to create a new valid shortcut. Warning! If the book is in the correct place, this will delete not only the shortcut but the e-book as well! This is a very good reason to find one place to put your e-books and then leave them alone.
Try setting your screen to a higher resolution. Higher resolution usually means more readable text.
Learn your display options. Windows XP® has a ClearType® option that the user can select under "display, appearance, effects." This option effectively increases the resolution for text. This option, however, must be selected manually by the user, because the default is standard font-smoothing.
In addition to adjusting options within the display driver programs, you should take the time to adjust your monitor's brightness and contrast controls. And turn a light on.
Anything that eases strain on the eyes will make your reading experience more enjoyable. The reader programs themselves also have options to achieve maximum readability. These options will be found under "menu" or "settings."
Just as eye comfort is important, body posture and comfort is also critical for reading books. Move controls closer to your body. Lower or raise the top of the monitor to eye level. Align your back and neck to a natural position. Adjust your position frequently. Take breaks, stretch, move around, and look at objects from time to time. Alternate using the mouse and the keyboard controls. Use a good chair.
Larger monitors generally mean higher resolutions and more readable text.
Large type is easier to read. Since the e-book has no bulk, having more pages is not a disadvantage. An extra minute on a download will always be worth the wait if you receive a more readable book.

Electronic publishing has not yet lived up to its potential, which is enormous. Partly due to inadequate technology and partly due to the conservative nature of the publishing industry, the product offered to the public has not yet generated any excitement. The technology, however, improves daily and the giants of publishing are waking to the low costs of distributing electronically. We only need to excite the readership's interest with quality product.
Did you know that the major universities and colleges of the USA now require their students to have a computer? Did you know that nearly all computer users also read books for leisure and information? Did you know that even very large books require only minutes to download?
The marketing potential of the internet is vast. However, we must adapt to its limitations and expand to its advantages, changing the shape of books and even the publishing industry. We must design books to be friendly to the reader in this new environment. We must think outside of the paper box.
Paper books will be in demand for decadesand maybe forever because electronic display does not equal the total sensory experience that a quality book offers. Indeed, the popularity of electronic books will not necessarily translate into lower print sales, because increased interest in reading for information and entertainment increases sales in all book formats. In the same manner that free loans from libraries increased the interest of the general public in reading, low cost but high quality e-books will keep books in front of a public with more and more entertainment options. The quiet enjoyment of a good read is a pleasant escape from the noise and schock of the modern media blitz.
What is new to publishing is the availability of the ultimate test market and new marketing options. E-books offer readers a test drive of the book, while electronic sales offer publishers a test drive of the market. Many books which might never have been printed may prove themselves as e-books. Many books which should never be printed will die an inexpensive death. Some books with a very specific limited audience may only be sold as e-books forever. Therefore, what the electonic book offers to publishers is a multiplication of their optionsa tool for extending culture profitably.
We are about to experience an explosion of thought. Authors will be self-publishing at an enormous rate. Ideas which would have remained localized and then lost are going to have a world-wide audience. That audience is going to react with increasing sophistication as well as speed. Whole paradigms will flower and die within the time it now takes to market a printed book. Question: will the publishing industry move fast enough to influence the development of this new medium in their favor?
publishersElectronic books are computer files with built-in display and security instructions. booksoncomputer produces the three most common types of e-books, optimized for computer use, usable on almost every computer platform. To read an e-book requires a special program called a "reader". To securely distribute an e-book requires a special program located on the web server that is called a "content server". On verification of payment and security settings, the content server "hands off" the e-book to the reader. This process controls access to the e-book protecting against unauthorized distribution. However, no electronic safeguards are perfect. E-books may also be distributed as computer files, although in this case there will be no protections against unauthorized distribution.
publishersE-books are a useful product, but a new one that does not yet have a well-developed market. Currently, the most effecient method of marketing is through web sites devoted to books, where the downloadable e-book offers an attractive level of convenience and savings. The profits to publishers remain high because marketing, warehousing, and shipping costs are extremely lowapproaching zero. At this time, the web distributors, such as amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com, charge a significant percentage. However, this still provides for strong profits and the distributing web site provides valuable services that make this method of marketing and distributing a prudent choice.
E-books are themselves an relatively untapped and untested method of marketing for printed books. As just one example, e-books may be limited in use and duration in a variety of ways as a preview of the traditional printed book. Offering free or low cost copies of a new book for a limited time can build recognition and excitement for a book. E-books can be loaded with added-value features such as links to related content and products, provided that these features do truly add to the value and do not annoy the reading public. The marketing potential of e-books has been integrated into their very structure.
publishersbooksoncomputer produces e-books designed specifically for reading on computer screens, taking advantage of the benefits and compensating for the weaknesses of this medium in order to manufacture and distribute the best presentation of the content. We encourage you to take advantage of the profitability and the marketing potential of the e-book.
publishersbooksoncomputer.com currently offers two quality books free and more are on the way.
